A brief outline of one artist’s art practice

Cultural diversity, correlation, belief systems and rituals form a basis for my art practice.

These human characteristics, impact upon natural environments and my environmental concerns relate directly to Australia, whilst conveying a global concern.

Since my early travels to Thailand and Europe my experiences stimulated an intrigue with the diversity of people, cultures and environments. Through visiting places of worship and sacred sites I was exposed to different ways in which people practice religions, beliefs and associated rituals. My interest in calligraphy has expanded to include an interest in writing as communication, particularly illuminated manuscripts and currently the mark making of Chinese characters.

These experiences combined with technical and historical art studies are reflected in my art practice.

In 2002 I traveled to China where I experienced interaction with people and sites extremely new and varied to my culture.

Red Gate Gallery - Beijing offered me a residency in 2003, Australia-China Council awarded me a residency in Beijing in 2004. Because of the budding relationships and intense stimulation I find in the ancient culture and contemporary art making of China my current art is influenced by my Australian and Celtic history combining and interacting with eastern art practices.

I use a variety of media to enhance and harmonize with my conceptual expressions encompassing places of worship, sacred sites, spirituality, celebrations and related symbols.

Production includes working in multiples to form a series or a single artwork.

The listed artworks explore aspects of influences mentioned and show examples of the varied materials used in my art practice.

Within my art practice production I am considering the relationship of the works, particularly in installations, to each other and the audience. Often I am guiding the audience to move in certain ways throughout the work OR interacting with the work. This has become a more focused issue in recent installations.

I have always and still am interested in audience responses and the dialogue that they have with my artwork. While moving through processes of making my artwork I have a constant dialogue. This may fluctuate and expand from my original concept thus enhancing and allowing the work to grow.

I believe art making, when presented to the world, is a unique form of communication. We artists take on a responsibility of communication to a broader audience, when we present our art work. Often we are looking at how the work is considered by our peers but, at the same time, we are endeavoring to educate the everyday person in alternative ways of seeing and interacting.

Currently I am coordinating an exhibition to celebrate the 2011 International Women’s Day 100th anniversary that includes six Chinese and six Melbourne artists in collaboration. The project exhibition will be shown in Melbourne then travel to China to continue celebrations of the Year of Australia in China.

Nu Yishu Series V: Viriditas

An Australia- China Contemporary Arts Exchange Project.

The Artists 2000 Foundation Incorporated is proud to introduce a fresh, approach to Contemporary female artists engaging with each other.

As an ‘Imagine Australia’ event the ‘Nu Yishu’ project focuses on untangling misconceptions about the ‘other culture’ regarding Contemporary Art practise, broadening and opening opportunities for discussion on individual, cultural and social perspectives.

Nu Yishu (女 艺 术 Female Art) Series V: Viriditas is the latest in an ongoing series of separate but interconnected art exhibitions aimed at creating transglobal links; the impetus behind ‘nu yishu’ (Mandarin for female art) is the development of cultural exchange between Australian and Chinese artists.

Viriditas: “青 绿”

Viriditas denotes lushness and vitality. It has been translated in various ways, such as freshness, fertility, fecundity, fruitfulness, verdure, or growth.

The term comes from Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179), an inspirational woman, who coined the term viriditas - the greening power of God. She described this power as the agent of the God, a divine attribute that was the animating life-force within all creation giving it life, moisture and vitality.

‘Nu Yishu Series V: Viriditas’ brings together six Chinese and six Australian female artists. The intention, through pairing and collaboration, is for each artist to respond to their artist partner, their art practice, philosophy, theories, techniques and influences, thereby increasing knowledge and understanding of the two cultures and delivering this to a broader audience.

The twelve artists, whose art practices span installation, painting, photography, ceramics, assemblage and performance, from vastly different heritages and language base, are partnered to form six pairs. Each pair, whose art practice consists of different disciplines, for example a Chinese painter and Australian ceramic artist, are interacting, communicating and engaging with the other, creating new artwork utilizing the skills in which they are professional.

The Australian artists are rich in cultural diversity with heritages from Italy, Hungary, France, England and Indigenous Australia.

The major difference between the Chinese and Australian artists is age. Not the age of the individual, but the age of historical development, the age of their cultures and heritages, that significantly underpins their place in the world at this time. While Chinese cultural heritage can be traced back 5000 to 6000 years and white Australia less than 250 years, indigenous Australians, represented by Koori artist Megan Cadd, have lived and developed their culture for more than 40,000 years on this continent. This project gives emerging indigenous artist Megan Cadd the opportunity to represent and promote an accurate image of Indigenous Australians through her unique art making form.

Nu Yishu Series V: Viriditas opens an exchange that increases knowledge and understanding with an outcome through art making processes and collaborative creation that stimulates further audience dialogue regarding differences and similarities between ‘East and West’.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am 76 years old and am a full time artist with a large teaching studio in Warrandyte.

I have about 40 adults on my books for art classes.

Originally I trained as an art and craft teacher with the Vic. Education Dept. and have a Diploma of Art (RMIT) and 27 years experience teaching art and craft. I resigned to take up full time painting and teaching.

I am a Fellow of the Victoria Artists Society and the Australian Guild of Realist Artists.

My life is very full – painting, teaching, having exhibitions, judging art shows, demonstrating to art societies, writing, conducting workshops etc.

Apart from a life of art I have many other interests – my district, church, family, two car clubs, a vintage and rare car collection, and I race radio controlled yachts, (life member of the MG car club)

Retirement – what a dirty word!

From the art point of view my time at Carey (boarder 1948/49) was a disaster as there was no art or craft in the senior school – even the equipped woodwork dept. was shut. Everyone – teachers, parents and probably me assumed I would return to the family dairy farm.

It was a great surprise during my first or second year out of teacher’s college to receive a letter from Carey asking me if I was prepared to join the staff and establish an art department. As I was very inexperienced and still bonded to the education Department I declined – my life could have been so different!

I have two of my works at Carey – the bronze plaque of William Carey outside the Chapel and a portrait of my life time friend, teacher and mentor Lew Evans in the LH Evens Library.

Public works are very exciting and different from easel painting and I worked for a time as a sculptor and have work in such places as Whitley College and N Balwyn Baptist Church. I have designed a window for the Warrandyte Uniting Church and my wife, also a professional artist with a studio in Beijing , and I designed the major mosaic peace wall outside the same church.

Over 1100 people contributed to this wall!

Probably my most exciting and rewarding project last year was a very large replica painting for the burnt out Kinglake Anglican Church. The original by Violet Teague now hangs in the gloom in St. Paul ’s Cathedral ( Melb.). This featured on the front page of the ‘Age’ just before Christmas.

During August 2011 I am planning a major exhibition at the Manningham Gallery with a very dear indigenous artist from Mildura. Sometimes we work on the same paintings.

On a less than modest note I have held many exhibitions both here, interstate and in England (5) and have won many awards (excess 500).

The best being the Aust. Guild of Realist Painters Medallion Award in 2005.

I am very thankful to be having such an interesting and rewarding life.
